Mark's Review: We Are Marshall

We Are Marshall follows the story of the aftermath of the 1970 tragic plane crash that killed 75 people who were Coaches, Fans, and Players for the Marshall University Football team. In the aftermath the town and school battle to keep their football program alive as a tribute to those who died in the crash. Matthew McConaughey steps in as the role of the new Head Coach hired to put together a team. Matthew Fox is one of the coaches of the team who gives up his seat on the plane and therefore battles with himself as to whether or not he wants part of the program, finally deciding to return for one year. However, I feel one of the unsung characters in the film was David Starthairn's character as the President of the College who battles for this team that he himself was never interested in.
The film plays out as a semi documentary, with a narrator recounting the events leading up to, and following the film. It's a truly inspiring film, less for the football and more just for the story of the human spirit. Truth be told the football team that gets put together is terrible... but regardless their spirit and heart outweigh all of the NCAA's.
If you have some time to kill, i'd definately check this film out.
Final Rating: Enjoyable Film
mm
